What does PPE stand for?
PPE stands for Personal Protective Equipment and is the tool that ensures users' basic health protection and safety in various professional fields such as construction, industries, shipyard, Petro-chemical, offshore, oil & gas, etc. PPE is a device designed to be worn by an individual when one or more health and safety hazards. If hazards or the likelihood of threats are found, employers must select and have affected employees use properly fitted PPE suitable for protection from these hazards. It can include safety helmets, gloves, eye protection, high-visibility clothing, safety footwear, safety harnesses, and respiratory protective equipment (RPE).
Below is a list of essential PPE required within a workplace:
1. Head protection:
Head protection can shield the head
from physical hazards, and it can also safeguard the neck, hair, nose, and
ears, as well as other upper body areas.
Two main types of head protection are used in the workplace, these are:
- Industrial safety helmets (hard hats) are designed to protect
against materials falling from a height or swinging objects.
- Industrial scalp protectors (bump caps) are designed to protect from knocking against stationary objects.
2. Eye and Face Protection:
Appropriate eye protectors must be
provided where there is a potential for injury to the eyes or face from flying
particles, molten metal, liquid chemicals, acids or caustic liquids, chemical
gases or vapors, potential injurious light radiation, or a combination of
these. Face shields are heavier than other equipment, protecting your face and
eyes.
There are several types of eye & Face protection:
- Safety spectacles: these are similar to conventional glasses but
have a stronger lens; they can include side shields for additional
protection.
- Eye shield: a one-piece, frameless lens that is frequently worn
over prescription eyeglasses.
- Security glasses: these are made of flexible plastic frames and an
elastic headband.
- Face shields protect the face but do not completely enclose the eye; therefore, they do not provide protection from dust, gases, fumes, or mists. They are even heavier and bulkier than other types of eye protection.
3. Ear Protection:
Disclosure of high noise levels can cause hearing loss or impairment and create physical and psychological stress. There is no cure for noise-induced hearing failure, so controlling excessive noise exposure is the only way to avoid hearing damage. Specifically designed security is required, depending on the type of noise undergone and the auditory condition of the employee.
There are three types of hearing protection:
- Earmuffs/defenders that completely cover the ear.
- Ear plugs are inserted into the ear canal.
- Semi inserts (also called canal caps) cover the ear canal entrance.
4. Foot Protection:
Injuries to the legs can result from rolling or falling objects, heated chemicals, electrical dangers, and slippery surfaces. Utilizing PPE like Knee pads, Safety boots protect workers where the risk of heavy objects falling on their feet in the workplace.
There are two types of foot
protection:
- Safety boots and shoes come with slip-resistant soles,
penetration-resistant midsoles, and protective toe caps.
- Wellington boots: These are suitable for people who work in wet
conditions and usually are made from rubber; they also come with
slip-resistant soles, penetration-resistant midsoles, and protective toe
caps.
5. Hand and arm protection:
While working, handling sharp
objects, and vibrating equipment, Chemical substances can cause hand cuts,
fractures, skin burns, and absorption of harmful substances.
PPE includes hand protection like
safety gloves, gauntlets, and Wrist cuff armlets to avoid hand injuries.
Hand and arm protection come in a variety of forms:
- Gloves or gauntlets (leather, latex, nitrile, plastic coated, chain
mail, etc.).
- Wrist cuff armlets (e.g., used in glass cutting and handling).
6. Respiratory Protection:
The poisonous gases, chemicals, and
particle-droplets splashes, which include viruses and bacteria, cause human
inhalation. Information on the requirements for respirators to control the
development of occupational diseases caused by breathing air contaminated with
harmful dust, fogs, fumes, mists, gases, smokes, sprays, and vapors is
available in the Respiratory Protection part of our website.
RPE has full-face respirators, gas masks, N95 respirators, and self-contained breathing apparatus to protect workers from serious health injuries.
7. Full Body Shields:
Workers might protect their entire
bodies in particularly hazardous conditions. Body protection includes jackets,
aprons, lab coats, overalls, and full bodysuits. They are made from various
materials, including fire-retardant wool or cotton, rubber, leather, and plastic.
Types of body protection include:
- overalls, aprons, and coveralls (protection against hazardous
substances)
- clothing for hot, cold, or bad weather
- clothing to protect against machinery
- high visibility (jackets, trousers, and vests)
- harnesses
